Why Speech Therapy?

  • Does your voice sound hoarse or strained?
  • Does your voice quality support your gender expression?
  • Does your speech inhibit your willingness to speak?
  • Do you have difficulty being understood?
  • Do you misunderstand others?
  • Do you have significant trouble recalling words you knew in the past?
  • Do you struggle to get words out ?
  • Are you frequently asked to repeat yourself?
  • Does your voice, speech, or language stop you from participating in groups, speaking publicly, or speaking on the phone?
  • Do people focus on your accent instead of your message?
  • Could your family benefit from education about your communication challenge?

Speech therapy is helpful for those who have had a stroke, head trauma, Parkinson’s Disease, vocal nodules, or have other conditions such as stuttering. It is also designed to help a person who is trans obtain a voice that better represents their gender expression, as well as help someone modify their accent if it is causing misinterpretations.

At our first session I will listen to your concerns, administer assessments, and offer recommendations. Most often you will leave the session with a strategy you can implement immediately. If you choose to move forward, depending on your goals, speech therapy can take as little as 3 sessions or as long as 12 or more. It will take work to make the changes you seek, but the outcome will be well worth the effort.
